IRON (III) HYDROXIDE PRE-
CIPITATION REMEDIATION

SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND

PSK was engaged to determine the cause of extensive iron(III) hydroxide precipitation within a 3.8 ha portion of land located within an environmentally sensitive area. The land was known to contain Acid Sulfate Soils (ASS).

PSK was engaged to determine the cause of extensive iron(III) hydroxide precipitation within a 3.8 ha portion of land located within an environmentally sensitive area. The land was known to contain Acid Sulfate Soils (ASS).

SCOPE OF WORK UNDERTAKEN

  • Carried out an ASS assessment, in accordance with the National Acid Sulfate Soils Sampling and Identification Methods Manual, 2018, to understand the acidity regime in the soils, groundwater and surface water at the site and to hypothesise the likely causes of the iron(III) hydroxide formation
  • Assessed the concentrations of existing and potential acidity within the various soil horizons at the site
  • Established the groundwater flow direction and groundwater quality at the site, with respect to ASS parameters
  • Developed a pictorial site conceptual model
  • Engaged with stakeholders and regulators
  • Provided advice on water treatment
  • Developed an Acid Sulfate Soil Environmental Management Plan
